From Your Dock to Your Dock
Our process is designed to do two things exceptionally well: maximize the useful life of every pallet, and ensure that every pallet we deliver meets the highest quality standards in the industry. We achieve this through a systematic, six-stage workflow that eliminates guesswork and guarantees consistency.
Whether you are buying recycled wood pallets, selling your surplus, or using our pallet management program, every pallet that passes through our hands goes through the same rigorous process. Here is exactly how it works.
Collection & Pickup
Our fleet collects used, surplus, and damaged pallets directly from your dock. We service warehouses, distribution centers, manufacturing plants, and retail locations across San Diego County, Orange County, and the greater Southern California region. Collections can be scheduled as recurring pickups or requested on-demand.
- Free pickup for bulk quantities (50+ pallets)
- Scheduled recurring collections available weekly, biweekly, or monthly
- On-demand pickup with same-day or next-day service
- GPS-tracked fleet for real-time delivery and pickup visibility
Inspection & Assessment
Every pallet that enters our facility undergoes a thorough visual and structural inspection. Our trained technicians evaluate each pallet against industry standards for dimensional accuracy, load-bearing capacity, board integrity, and fastener condition. This step determines whether a pallet is fit for direct resale, needs repair, or should be dismantled for components.
- Dimensional verification against GMA, EUR, and custom specifications
- Load-bearing capacity assessment (static and dynamic ratings)
- Board-by-board integrity check for splits, rot, mold, and delamination
- Fastener condition evaluation (nail depth, pull-through, shear strength)
- Contamination screening for chemical spills, food residue, or pest evidence
Sorting & Grading
Inspected pallets are sorted into quality grades that match our customers' needs and budgets. Our grading system follows industry-standard conventions while adding our own additional quality checks. This ensures you receive exactly the grade of pallet you ordered, with no surprises on the dock.
- Grade A (Like New): Minimal wear, no repairs needed, cosmetically clean
- Grade B (Good): Fully functional with minor cosmetic wear, may have one or two replaced boards
- Grade C (Economy): Structurally sound, cosmetic imperfections acceptable, ideal for one-way shipping
- Component Recovery: Pallets not viable for repair are dismantled for usable boards and hardware
Repair & Recycling
Pallets that need repair enter our dedicated repair line, where experienced technicians replace damaged boards, re-drive loose nails, reinforce weak points, and restore the pallet to full load-bearing specification. We use kiln-dried hardwood and softwood replacement boards that match the original construction. Pallets requiring heat treatment for international shipping are processed in our ISPM-15 certified kiln.
- Board replacement with species-matched, kiln-dried lumber
- Pneumatic nail guns for consistent fastener depth and holding power
- Stringer repair and reinforcement for structural pallets
- Block replacement for block-style pallets
- ISPM-15 heat treatment available for all repaired pallets
- Non-repairable wood is processed into mulch, bedding, or biomass fuel
Quality Check
Before any pallet leaves our facility, it passes a final quality inspection. This is not a random spot check; every single pallet is verified. Our QC team confirms that the pallet meets its assigned grade specification, that all repairs are structurally sound, and that the pallet is free of protruding nails, splinters, or other hazards. Pallets that do not pass are sent back to the repair line or regraded.
- 100% inspection rate (no sampling or spot checks)
- Dimensional tolerance verification: +/- 1/4 inch on all dimensions
- Weight test: pallets must support rated load without deflection
- Safety check: no protruding nails, splinters, or sharp edges
- Cleanliness verification: no visible contamination, mold, or insect activity
- Grade-specific compliance sticker applied to every passing pallet
Distribution & Delivery
Quality-approved pallets are stacked, banded, and loaded onto our delivery trucks for transport to your facility. We offer flexible delivery scheduling including same-day service for urgent orders. Our drivers are trained in safe pallet handling and will place your order exactly where you need it on your dock or in your yard.
- Same-day delivery available for in-stock items
- Scheduled recurring deliveries to match your production cycles
- Flatbed and box truck options for orders of all sizes
- Forklift-equipped trucks for ground-level unloading
- Delivery confirmation with photo documentation
- Combined pickup/delivery runs to minimize trips and emissions
Our Quality Promise
We understand that a pallet failure on the warehouse floor or in transit can mean damaged goods, delayed shipments, and real financial loss. That is why we inspect 100% of our pallets, not a random sample, before they leave our facility. Every pallet carries our quality guarantee.
Our repair technicians average over five years of experience in pallet construction and repair. They know the difference between a board that will hold up under a 2,500-pound dynamic load and one that won't. They know which nail patterns provide maximum holding power and which stringer repairs will last. This expertise, combined with our systematic inspection process, is what allows us to confidently guarantee every pallet we sell.
If a pallet we supplied fails to meet its grade specification during normal use, we will replace it at no cost. That is a promise backed by our certifications and our reputation. Learn more about the standards and credentials behind our quality promise on our certifications page.
Quality Control Checkpoints at Every Stage

Manual vs. Automated: Our Hybrid Approach
Some pallet operations rely entirely on manual labor; others invest in full automation.SD Re Pallet takes a hybrid approach that combines the consistency and speed of automation with the judgment and adaptability of experienced technicians. Here is how the two approaches compare and why our hybrid model delivers the best results.
| Process Area | Fully Manual | Fully Automated | SD Re Pallet Hybrid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inspection speed | 30 sec/pallet | 2 sec/pallet | 5 sec/pallet (camera + human verify) |
| Defect detection rate | 85-90% | 92-95% | 98%+ (AI flags, human confirms) |
| Repair quality | High (skilled labor) | Limited (standard repairs only) | Highest (tech handles standard, expert handles complex) |
| Throughput per shift | 600-800 pallets | 2,000+ pallets | 1,200-1,600 pallets |
| Custom pallet capability | Excellent | Poor (requires retooling) | Excellent (manual line for custom) |
| Setup cost | Low | Very high ($500K+) | Moderate |
| Flexibility | Very high | Low | High |
Our hybrid model gives us the throughput to handle large-volume orders while maintaining the craftsmanship needed for custom pallets and complex repairs. As our automated inspection pilot matures, we expect throughput to increase further without sacrificing our 100% inspection standard.
